im 99% sure you do need that cable. unless you want to do some wierd experiment with a potato and some gatorade but that would just be wierd.
if you’ve lost it you can easily find a new one on eBay or possibly a psp retailer.

All u have to do is get a usb cord(any will do)
go to your settings and turn the usb charge on.
plug into your computer and watch it charge
If you have a PSP slim (the skinny one) You CAN connect it VIA USB to charge it… but only while the PSP is on.
so its kinda stupid.
You kinda need the cord they give you though.
you can charge it with the usb if you have the slim psp go in you settings go in usb charge and turn it on
the slim can be charged with the usb cable but if you have a psp phat like me. you can buy a battery charger. all you do is take out your battery and put it inside it. it will charge after that. but i recommend using the ac adaptor. much better. i have to use the battery charger. my psp dsnt charge with the cable. : (
